Prestigious ‘Diamond Award’ for Ladysmith Secondary learner at English Olympiad

The Lasec family salutes all who took part in the Olympiad and did so well

Ladysmith Secondary School (Lasec) recently took part in the 2020 De Beers English Olympiad competition, which was organised by the Grahamstown Foundation and the South Africa Council for English Education.

This writing competition draws over 8000 entries each year from around South Africa and neighboring countries.

Lasec’s Tashiana Bhagwandeen (Grade 12) walked away with a ‘Diamond Award’ (80%-100%) and also made the list of the top 100 candidates who attained this prestigious award.

The learners who participated in this competition managed to obtain three gold, four silver and four bronze awards, as well as a host of merit and participation awards.

The main objectives of this Olympiad are:

*To enrich learners through the study of English and encourage them to explore the language beyond the scope of the school syllabus.

*To encourage critical thinking and creative writing.

*To explore syllabus and examination questions that are outside the conventional school syllabus.

*To tap into the participant’s acute critical abilities and share writing skills.
