Tourism staff form a ‘human chain’ to protest against lockdown

The protesters held their placards aloft, bearing messages asking for the tourism industry to be opened

The tourism industry plays a vital role in South Africa’s economy and the livelihoods of many across the country, including right here on our doorstep in Ladysmith. The world-renowned Drakensberg Mountains is a popular tourist destination for many South Africans and overseas visitors.

With the above in mind, the tourism sector in the entire Okhahlamba area took to the streets on Wednesday, July 22, to protest against the continuing nationwide lockdown.

Employers and employees (from hotels, lodges, guest houses and activity centres), as well as sympathisers, staged a peaceful protest by forming a human chain on the R74 from the Winterton and Bergville sides.

The protesters held their placards aloft, bearing messages asking for the tourism industry to be opened, as their livelihoods depend on it.

They say that too many jobs have been lost and establishments closed due to the lockdown.

The protesters made their way to Okhahlamba Local Municipality, where a memorandum was handed over to Okhahlamba Mayor Mlungisi Ndlangisa and Municipal Manager Nkosingiphile Malinga by Democratic Alliance (DA) Member of Parliament Alf Lees.
