Masks and sandwiches handed out to patients at Ladysmith hospital

The majority of patients waiting at the hospital did not have a mask and were thankful to receive one

In light of the shortage of masks currently available, the Islamic Medical Association (IMA) of South Africa has launched a nationwide project and is looking for volunteers to sow masks for them.

200 masks already made, along with sandwiches, were handed to patients waiting at Ladysmith Provincial Hospital on Tuesday morning (April 14).

95% of the patients waiting at the hospital did not have a mask and were thankful to receive one.

The IMA team – consisting of Sr Ruwaida Asvat (ultrasonographer), Sr Tasneem Amla (nursing sister), Sr Faaiza Desai (speech therapist) and Dr Mulla – was joined by hospital CEO Mr BL Msibi and PRO T Sithole.

Mr Msibi showed the patients the correct way to wear a material mask, as well as how to wash and iron it after use.

Mr Msibi also mentioned that the hospital has measures in place to screen patients for Covid-19.

The patients who received the masks and sandwiches from the IMA were grateful for the sustenance and being kept safe from the virus.
