Karate kids get ready for first regional competition of the year

Karate classes are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and the club is looking for more members to join

The Ladysmith JKA Club is training hard for their first regional competition of the year, which will take place on March 1. A Ladysmith Gazette journalist caught up with the karatekas on Tuesday evening (January 21) at the Scouts Hall, training with Sensei Charles. Speed and agility, kicks, blocks and punches combine with hip movement to bring out maximum strength and power.

New beginners were also there, looking on and learning what karate is all about.

According to Sensei Charles, karate tones the body, develops co-ordination, quickens reflexes and builds stamina.

Karate is one of the most dynamic of all the martial arts. Sincerity, discipline, etiquette and self control are the five maxims in this sport.

According to Sensei Shani Mason, you use open hand in karate, meaning that no weapons are used. The body itself is a tool for defence.

Karate classes are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and the club is looking for more members to join. If you’re interested, contact Sensei Shani Mason on 0723755174 for prices and more information.
