Take a drive through town and see all the things in need of attention

It saddens me that the infrastructure of the town is deteriorating rapidly, with no evidence of efforts to resuscitate it

Editor – I address this letter to the municipal manager and the local councillors. I hope you had a wonderful Christmas and you saw in 2020 with a spirit of rejuvenation.

As you are well aware, you are the representatives of the people of Emnambithi. It saddens me that the infrastructure of the town is deteriorating rapidly, with no evidence of efforts to resuscitate it.

I would urge you, before you take up your lofty positions in the council chambers, to perhaps hire a bus and drive through the streets of Ladysmith and the surrounding areas under your jurisdiction.

This is the only way you will perhaps understand what I am alluding to.

I would also urge you to take an additional trip at night for different reasons.

As an example, please drive through Crowshaw Street and see the number of streetlights that are non-functional. This street is the main thoroughfare through town and is in actual fact part of the N11. One actually traverses this street at one’s own peril, in darkness. The same can be said for numerous streets in the town.

Please look carefully at the intersection of Convent and Egerton Road, where there is a traffic light. Due to gross neglect and negligence, three potholes have appeared at this intersection simply because water is overflowing from the island at the intersection.

All these potholes could have been prevented if you took it upon yourselves to ensure that the water leak had been taken care of. After all, is prevention not better than cure?

I hope that you have an enjoyable bus trip and that you resolve to right the wrongs you come across.

In this way, the huge salaries you earn (from our rates and taxes) will be justified and you can go to bed every evening with a clear conscience.
