Monument Primary School’s senior choir makes national ‘Sing in Harmonie’ finals

The choir made it through to the regional finals last year, eventually coming 5th

Monument Primary School’s senior choir performed in the national finals of the ‘Sing in Harmonie’ competition on Friday (November 1) at the Kaleideo Auditorium in Kempton Park. This is a fantastic achievement!

The competition is aired on Kyk Net Nou channel 146 on DSTV and is presented by artist Anthonie Bougas.

This is the second year Monument has taken part. Last year, they made it through to the regional finals, eventually coming fifth.

Speaking to accompanist Mrs Beukes and school principal Mr Rich, you have to pay an entrance fee to get into the competition, after which ‘Sing in Harmonie’ representatives come to the school to conduct recordings and interviews. Then you go into the first round of the competition.

In 2019, the first round was held in Newcastle, where the choir competed in the informal category and came first, achieving the required number of points to make it to the next round.

Thereafter, they travelled to Johannesburg for the regional finals, where they came first yet again in the informal category, competing against 88 other choirs from around the country.

On Friday, they went up against 10 senior primary school choirs from all around the country in the national finals… Schools from as far as Cape Town, Nelspruit, Potchefstroom, Johannesburg and Witbank.

Monument teachers Mrs Hay and Mrs Beukes started preparing the choir from the first day of school. They say the children have worked hard and put everything into their performances.

Principal Mr Rich is extremely proud of the school’s senior choir (Grade 4 to 7) and says it’s the first time the school has done so well in culture. Mrs Beukes ended off by saying that the choir has become a family, as they know each other so well. They practice two hours a week and squeeze in a few minutes every morning to practice together.

So tune in to Kyk Net Nou to see how the Monument Primary School choir fared in the national finals.
