Saboteurs tamper with town’s water supply?

People are urged to report any suspicious acts to their ward councillor, directly to uThukela or the police

As uThukela District Municipality faces a period of almost constant interrupted water supply to certain areas in the district, the latest shocker is the allegations of sabotage to pipelines and scour valves.

Information about alleged sabotage has been received from ward councillors in Roosboom, Mcitsheni, St Chad’s, Driefontein, Manzinabilayo and Pieters.

The allegations involve suspected tampering with the water supply by saboteurs and the matter has already been reported to law enforcement agencies for investigation.

The municipality urges members of the public to be vigilant at all times and be able to identify municipal vehicles and private vehicles.

People are further urged to report any suspicious acts to their ward councillor, directly to uThukela or the police.

Some areas go for days without water, necessitating alternative sources for household purposes and personal use.

In this regard, water tampering is an incredibly worrisome issue for the district municipality. The municipality adds that this alleged sabotage is one of the main reasons for the current water challenges they are facing.

To sabotage, vandalise and deny access to water is a criminal offence. It is civilians who consume water and as such, they are the ones who are negatively affected by water shortages if the supply is tampered with, say uThukela.
