Vryheid citizens were left in disbelief this past weekend after a municipal official shot and killed his wife and himself in broad daylight out in the street, in the presence of their 14-year-old child.
According to SAPS Zululand Cluster spokesperson Captain Nkocy Gwala, the man had a domestic quarrel with his wife, which is believed to have led to the fatal double shooting.
“It is alleged that on Saturday at about 1.30pm, Zamikhaya Nyoka engaged in domestic violence with his wife, Khanyisile Nyoka. Mr Nyoka worked at AbaQulusi Public Safety and Mrs Nyoka at Vryheid Correctional Services. The couple had a quarrel and it was later revealed that they were having domestic problems which they were trying to sort out in court.

“On the day, Mr Nyoka was seen chasing his wife with a car in town. They were both driving different vehicles. Mr Nyoka caught up with his wife at the corner of Church and West Street. The two vehicles stopped and Mr Nyoka stepped out of his vehicle.
“He shot his wife several times and then shot himself. Mr Nyoka died instantly in the road, while Mrs Nyoka was rushed to AbaQulusi Private Hospital, where she later succumbed to her gunshot wounds. Mr Nyoka sustained one gunshot wound to the forehead, which exited on his left side.
“During the attack, their 14-year-old child was with Mrs Nyoka in the car, and was also injured and taken to Vryheid AbaQulusi Hospital. A 9mm service firearm was recovered from Mr Nyoka. Four empty cartridges and projectiles were recovered at the scene and were all booked in as per Vryheid SAPS 13,” reported Capt Gwala.
An inquest has been opened.
