Serushen kicks up a karate storm

Future plans for karate are also high on his to-do list and he hopes to one day achieve a black belt, become a sensei like his role model Sensei Johan Swart, and complete all his dans.

Armed with a 3rd Kyu Brown belt, Serushen Govender is kicking up a storm in the world of Karate. He will also be soon jetting off to Johannesburg to take part in the South African JKA championships on June 4.
Serushen began his Karate career in 2009 at the tender age of 11 at Japan Karate Shotokal (JKS). He has since scaled new heights and joined the Japan Karate Association (JKA) in 2011.
His 6-year long career has earned him many prestigious achievements which include the 3rd Kyu Brown belt, 16 certificates and 4 medals.
When asked how he got into Karate, Serushen explained that the draw-card was starting something new and of course building muscle. His dad, Jace Govender said with a chuckle, “he started because he was too hyperactive and needed to utilise his energy productively”.
Looking back Serushen describes his experience with Karate as being ‘enjoyable and life changing.’
However, his journey had not always been smooth and he encountered many challenges too. “Training is tough but it pays off. That is one of the biggest challenges,” Serushen exclaimed.
With every hurdle is a reward and as a result Serushen reaped the highlights of karate too.
“The highlights for me was attaining self-discipline and learning how to manage my bad temper,” Serushen explained.
When he is not honing his karate, Serushen can be seen deejaying, ‘fiddling with cars’ and drawing.
He is currently in Grade 11 and hopes to one day take up Graphic Designing or Mechanical Engineering.
Future plans for karate are also high on his to-do list and he hopes to one day achieve a black belt, become a sensei like his role model Sensei Johan Swart, and complete all his dans.
