DHS enjoy the beautiful game: hockey

The DHS hockey boys enjoyed a really great day of beautiful hockey at the Hockey trials. The boys played four matches in total. Unfortunatelytheir first opponents did not arrive so DHS played Carter High School twice.
The results were as follows: in their first match against Carter High, DHS won 1-0. DHS then moved on to play Grace College and despite attacking the whole match, they failed to convert any goals, eventually losing 1-0. Their second match against Carter High resulted in a 1-1 draw and the final match of the day against Wembley College resulted in a 2-0 victory! The boys will be informed at a later stage as to whether they were selected for the KZN Inlands team. Regardless of the selections, the boys made DHS and their manager, Mrs Raffenberg, very proud as they were the only team attending from Northern Natal!
Daily News and Rotary Public Speaking
Over the past few weeks, five DHS teams worked on speeches that sought to identify, tackle and solve local problems. They competed against each other until two winning teams were selected to represent Dundee High in the preliminary round of the competition. These two teams went up against Sarel Cilliers and Inkamana High School (Vryheid). It was a tough competition as all the teams displayed a mature approach to some serious problems. Finally, the judges selected a team from Inkamana High as runners-up, and the DHS team, made up of Atiyyah Ameen, Wandile Khumalo and Sadiyah Malek, as the winners. Both these teams will move on to compete in the semi-finals in Newcastle this week. The school wishes these teams all of the best. Congratulations to Nomalungelo Mkhize, Trishen Pillay and Zhen Lee Wang who made up the second DHS team and surely learnt a lot from their first experience of this competition. A special thank you to the adjudicators who had the very tough job of deciding the winners and to the members of Rotary who attended to support the competition. DHS would like to encourage more local schools to get involved in this competition as it teaches valuable skills!
Athletics
The following athletes from Dundee High (Umzinyati District) did very well during the KZN championships in Durban. Jan-Frederik van Zyl (javelin Gold), Surina Gregory (Long jump Silver), Lethiwe Mothonsi (100mbronze). We’ll done DHS!
Mudman
Very full busses left for the Midmar Dam on Saturday to set up camp with the Cordwalles parents. Camp was soon set up and it was time for some fun: first up, a very big cricket match with very complicated rules. Then it was time for a night run. As the DHS campsite settled down for the night, the weather became a little scary; high winds could be heard rushing over the dam, resulting in many people packing up in the middle of the night. There were many broken and smashed gazebo’s and a few collapsed tents. Anyway the DHS learners woke up to a beautiful summer’s day at the dam. Great fun was had and all the DHS multisport athletes did very well both in the individual and team events.
Gabby Carter, took first in her age group and was the first lady overall in Half distance swim. Joshua Donaldson did the half distance Paddle, and also came first in his age group. Well done to the two of you! Thank you to Kobus and Amanda Muller who sponsored the meat for the evening’s braai. Thank you to Posselt Lauwrens for driving the sprinter and lastly to Mrs Carter for being so awesome.
Congratulations to the following learners who took part in the Cordwalles Mudman and completed the half individual event: Gabby Carter (1st in Age + 1st Female overall), Stephan Fereirra, Brandon Grondein, Jessica Shannahan, Caide Sharp, Bryce Sharp, Caitlyn Mitchell, Duane Lauwrens, Keaton von Rauenstein, Rachel Steenkamp, Joshua Donaldson (paddle – 1st in Age group), Kayla Tredoux and Abby Box. Congratulations to Christiaan van Dyk who completed the Individual distance. DHS also had a few teams that completed the full distance. Congratulations to: Cheree Ollewagen and Siphumele Gumede; Nadia Raffenberg, Dylan Mare and Karla Muller; Muhammed Ebrahim and Tian Wang; Chantel Carter, Jancu Kotze and Luske Kritzinger; Sinethemba Vilakazi, Cebo Ntshangase and Thembeka Masuku.
