The case for security cameras in the CBD is loud and clear

Mr Bester said that a 'security control centre was lying moribund at the fire station on Diaz Road'

The need for monitored security cameras in the central business district is no longer a case of ‘should we do it’ but rather ‘how long can we afford not to have cameras in Dundee and Glencoe?’.
That is the view of FC Bester, Endumeni Residents’ Association, following a spike in crime in the CBD. “From the Pick and Win Supermarket shoot-out to bomb threats, to hi-jackings to smash and grabs (at Lewis Stores), our town is under siege from criminals. Police cannot be everywhere and sometimes we hear of them not being able to get a van out because of a change of shift. Monitored cameras are surely the answer. Why has the Council not followed up on numerous requests that have also come up at ward committee meetings?”, he asked.
Mr Bester said that a ‘security control centre was lying moribund at the fire station on Diaz Road’. “We know that there was a plan in the offing over 10 years ago to set up monitoring of cameras in this console. Nothing happened as the Council is alwas more interested in making political appointment and jobs for pals rather than getting down to serve the people who pay the bills.

High prices
“Unfortunately, the municipality is not a supermarket. If we don’t like shop A because of high prices, we can always go to shop B. But in this case we are stuck with Endumeni Municipality.”
Mr Bester said the installation of cameras would be great publicity for the town as people and potential investors would feel safer.
