Extinction: the end of an organism or of a group of organisms, normally a species.
From dinosaurs to the dodo bird and even honest politicians, extinction has brought about the end of many species. And it seems as if Indians could be next.
A new law passed in Cape Town seeks to clamp down on all modified cars, bringing an end to illegal racing.
At the moment the problem is just in Cape Town where there’s not many Indians and the few Indians that are there, think they are Coloured.
But what happens when the bill spreads to the rest of South Africa, especially KwaZulu-Natal. Indians in KZN are already in panic, thinking what the bill could mean for them.
Thunga ‘Turbo’ Naicker, a local street racer, said he couldn’t imagine life without modified cars. No more dropped suspensions and turbos, no more NOS or neon lights.
“El, what I’m supposed to do now and all? I can’t be fishing all the time!” he said.
Like Thunga, many other Indians are planning for life without ‘souped up’ cars. Many will turn to fishing, while some may take up cricket.
Others will opt for just watching sport from the couch.
Damendrain ‘Supra’ Subramoney also is feeling the nerves but said that Indians would stand together to fight the passing of the bill.
“They don’t know us nicely, we’ll finish that bill so fast, it won’t know what hit it,” Damendrain said.
“That bill will leave so fast just like my Golf GTI leaves the ous at a robot when they want to race me,” he added.
Thunga and Damendrain are among the many in the motoring world who have felt victimised by the new bill. Many motoring companies and businesses who sell modified parts say the bill is tackling the problem of street racing the wrong way.
There is still hope that the bill won’t make its way over to these shores. Racing enthusiast, Sagren ‘NOS’ Naidoo said he would start cutting a black fowl already, to ward off the evil spirits the bill carried.
“The last thing I want is to have to go back to India,” he said, “you can’t drag race with all that traffic there.”
