Sarel Cilliers prefects put through their paces

Last Friday, January 23, an excited group of newly-appointed prefects from Sarel Cilliers High School embarked on the annual prefect camp at the Drakensville Resort.
On arrival, the prefects, joined by teachers Mrs de Swardt and Mr Slabbert, had the opportunity to cool off with a swim and admire the glorious scenery. A super-tube added to the afternoon’s enjoyment, with only the brave-hearted attempting the horrifying slide down into the water – which proved to be everyone!
After being given time to settle in, the prefects had to perform a song and dance routine in groups of four – everyone was encouraged to display their ‘moves’ and ability to improvise and to learn from one another. This was a good opportunity to identify good leadership skills and teamwork – which Sarel had in abundance.
The prefects put on an excellent performance and showed everyone that they could ‘shake down’ any dance floor.
The following day the children’s ingenuity and problem-solving skills were tested – they had to build a raft and use it to sail across a dam. This daunting task was performed brilliantly by the students, who were later rewarded with an extremely high, fear-inspiring Fufi slide. The teachers were very proud to see that some of the students conquered their fear of heights in order not to let down their teammates.
Other weekend activities included paintball, as well as games such as ‘Popi Ngwenya’ and Spot the Lantern. By the last day, everyone was exhausted and the time was used to relax, recant tales and reflect on the wonderful experiences of the weekend.
The prefects would like to thank the Principal, Dr. Neethling, for granting them this wonderful opportunity to bond together in such a superb environment and also for his inspiring motivational speech which imparted much wisdom for the year 2015.
Thanks also go to the instructors Sam and Vernon at the Drakensville Resort and to all the teachers and staff who made the weekend such and memorable experie
