Amajuba District launches multi-million Rand water project

"There is commitment from all involved parties that the project should also be beneficial to the local contractors and provide employment to local people."

The Amajuba District Municipality recently launched the construction of the Braakfontein reservoirs, a multi-million Rand water project.

Dr Musa Ngubane, Mayor of Amajuba District Municipality, was accompanied by Newcastle Mayor, Dr Ntuthuko Mahlaba and the Speaker of Amajuba District Municipality, Cllr Phumzile Mgcina, earlier this month in an effort to address water challenges faced by many communities in the Dannhauser Local Municipality.

The District Municipality is presently implementing Buffalo Flats Water Phase 4 bulk water supply scheme to assure the supply of potable water to the community in the Buffalo Flats area.

In response to the water challenges, the municipality will be constructing a 20Mâ„“ Reinforced Concrete Reservoir and Associated Works at the Braakfontein reservoirs in Newcastle.

The total number of household beneficiaries is more than 4 000 households, with a spare capacity, stated the Amajuba District in a statement.

“The commencement of this project will not only benefit the main contractor financially. There is commitment from all involved parties that the project should also be beneficial to the local contractors and provide employment to local people. It is the intention of the contractor and Amajuba Distrct to enhance local employment as far as possible. Certain tasks have been identified for the mandatory use of Labour-Intensive Construction Methods. Apart from the identified tasks the contractor shall plan his/her works in general to make maximum use of labour-intensive methods in preference to the use of plant where appropriate.”

Cllr Ngubane welcomed this long waited for project and emphasised that the completion deadlines should be met by the contractor so the community could benefit from it.

“We are excited to finally see the commencement of this massive project. Our humblest plea is that it be completed within the set deadlines. Local communities should also be made preference in all available economic and employment opportunities,” said Dr Ngubane.
