[CRIME]: Quick-thinking stops electricity thieves during police operation

Eskom equipment was recovered in one of the operations.

In a joint operation between the Newcastle Cluster Task Team, Osizweni Crime Prevention and Osizweni Reservist members, various raids were conducted within the Osizweni policing area.

According to Lizzy Arumugam from Newcastle SAPS Corporate Communications, an operation on July 8 resulted in a good haul.

“Intelligence members raided to a house at Section E in the Osizweni area, and one suspect was arrested for possession of suspected stolen goods,” she confirmed.

The following goods were recovered – a black JVC LCD flat screen 32 inch television set, a black 32 inch Royal LED flat screen television set and a black 32 inch Samsung flat screen TV.

“Members went to another house in Section E and one suspect was arrested for being in possession of stolen property after a black One Fusion flat screen television was recovered in his home,” continued Arumugam.

In the same area at another home, intelligence members made three more arrests and recovered a gold and black Mobicel cellphone and a pair of black and white Nike takkies.

“In Section A, two suspects were arrested for being in possession of stolen property after a black Lenovo laptop was recovered,” said Arumugam.

While on patrol on the public road next to Thubelihle High School in Section A, police officials spotted a motor vehicle with an MP registration transporting what appeared to be Eskom equipment.

When questioned, four suspects failed to give officers a reasonable explanation for the equipment, which could be used for illegal connections purposes, and were subsequently arrested. Officials recovered a grey bag, a pair of safety shoes, two safety belts and one connectivity base unit.
