Stores close for Covid-19 sanitisation

Three stores closed for sanitisation after positive Covid-19 cases were identified.

Three stores at Newcastle Mall have closed temporarily after positive cases of Covid-19 were identified.

This comes after a message, which was circulated on social media, was brought to the attention of the mall’s management today.

Miladys was closed but has since re-opened for trade again, Woolworths closed today (June 29) for sanitisation, but will re-open its doors tomorrow (June 30) and African Bank which will be closed for two days for sanitisation and will re-open on Wednesday, July 1.

Newcastle Mall’s marketing manager, Beulah Rajkumar said:

“Our number one priority is to minimise any potential risk while also ensuring business as usual. This remains the case as the public begins to return in greater numbers to shopping malls. Newcastle Mall is committed to the safety of its customers, tenants and business partners.”

Rajkumar said management continues to partner with its tenants to co-ordinate efforts to combat the pandemic by following the recommendations of the World Health Organisation and other local health authorities.

“We remain committed to supporting our retailers by taking responsibility of the common areas while they take responsibility for their individual stores and ask that the public play their part as well.”

“We are in contact with our tenants to ensure shared responsibility with regard to increased hygiene precautions and sanitisation in their stores, to limit any potential risk to customers and to encourage continued trade.”

Newcastle Mall’s management said they have been deep cleaning common areas but this has since been intensified through the use of stronger chlorine disinfectants (Sintol) and cleaning is now more frequent on hard surfaces.

The mall has also increased the number of cleaning staff who pay special attention to ‘touchpoint’ areas, such as handles and switches.

Posters have been designed and displayed at entrances and in common areas, for example bathrooms, to create public awareness .

Stringent monitoring of the mall is in place, confirmed Rajkumar.

“We ensure we are kept current on all relevant official advice and adapt our centre’s guidelines accordingly,” she concluded.
