Newcastle resident reflects on her European odyssey

The couple enjoyed a scenic tour of Europe, enjoying the tastes and sights of popular locations.

Travelling abroad is a chance to experience a new culture and enrich your life. This is according to local resident, Tagan Maritz, who recently had the opportunity to travel to Europe with her partner, Sean Adams.

The couple visited England, France, Switzerland, Italy, Austria, the Czech Republic, Poland, Germany and the Netherlands, and both agreed it was a life-changing experience.

“Both Sean and myself share a mutual interest in travelling and we have always wanted to tour Europe. Once we had a plan in place on how we were going to pay for our adventure, everything really came together and it was very exciting.”

Prior to jetting off, the couple saved up money and ensured their paperwork and documentation was in order beforehand. These two steps are important to prevent a rocky start to one’s journey (or even not starting the journey at all).

The couple enjoys scenic views in the Swiss Alps.

Tagan’s advice for small-town tourists:

Tagan and Sean suggested tourists find smaller, family-owned restaurants and shops to support. By doing this, tourists can meet genuine people and experience a culture in its purest form. This is opposed to generic and over-processed destinations which are more about making money.

“Do not get caught up in the tourist aspect of the big cities.”

What did she enjoy most about the European tour?

Tagan and Sean said their journey had many memorable moments, from the exotic cuisine to the breathtaking views of the Swiss Alps in Switzerland.

“Sean enjoyed Lucerne in Switzerland and I on the other hand fell in love with Venice – for both the Italian food and beautiful sights of a city on water.”

Italian cuisine (and sweet treats) were among highlights for Tagan.

Lessons the couple took from the overseas adventure

Tagan said being abroad taught her how unique South African customs and norms are, and helped her develop more of an appreciation for the small things often taken for granted. She was also glad to meet many like-minded individuals, who she hopes can become lifelong friends.

“One thing we have in South Africa, which Europe does not, are free public toilets!” she concluded with a laugh.
