Things you might not know about Matthew Shunmugam

Cllr Shunmugam is a stalwart of both public administration and local sport.

In this week’s edition of the Newcastle Advertiser, Ward 3 Councillor, Matthew Shunmugam reveals the impact the nationwide lockdown has had on his ability to serve his ward and reveals some of the highs and lows he has experienced during these unprecedented times.

Cllr Shunmugam, who is also a member of the Development Planning and Human Settlements portfolio, is often described as dynamic and multifaceted. He has actively served Ward 3 for the past 23 years and has become the go-to person for many municipal matters.

There appears to be more to this stalwart official than one might first assume. Here are six things a resident should know about Cllr Shunmugam:

  • Cllr Shunmugam grew up in Umzinto on the South Coast, where his family lived and his father worked on a sugar cane plantation. Cllr Shunmugam says a tough childhood growing up in poverty helps him identify with people struggling day by day, and makes him more sympathetic to their respective plights.
  • He is a qualified teacher who during his career, focused on physical education and was involved with many different sports codes at this level.
  • Cllr Shunmugam credits himself as a founder of volleyball in Newcastle. He is also a former administrator of a NKZN sports body and boasts tenures on local soccer, cricket and angling committees. He says this gifted him a wealth of knowledge and taught him skills and principles he still applies today as a municipal representative.
  • He owns a funeral services business. Cllr Shunmugam admits he often assists families who are unable to afford the cost of a funeral or cremation, and believes strongly in a spirit of humanitarianism.
  • Cllr Shunmugam prides himself on remaining on the frontlines, despite the threat of Covid-19. He says it is important for a person in his position to be accessible and willing to risk one’s self to help another.
  • He considers himself a free spirit who is able to fit in with any demographic. Cllr Shunmugam is often a guest at community and religious gatherings and believes this contributes to his success and popularity.
