Residents queued at the taxi rank on June 4, to receive free face masks being distributed by the Newcastle Municipality.

The distribution formed part of the municipality’s Covid-19 ‘No one left behind’ programme to curb the number of positive coronavirus cases in the Amajuba District.

“We want to keep the number of positive cases as low as possible and to slow the rate of new infections,” stated Mayor Ntuthuko Mahlaba.

Mahlaba revealed taxi ranks, buses and taxis have been identified as possible hotspots for the spread of the virus. During the distribution, Mayor Mahlaba interacted with commuters and taxi drivers teaching them about the dangers of the virus.
