Sting operation nets R200K worth of drugs

Members of the sting operation found a loose compartment in the vehicle, with Mandrax tablets hidden inside.

A total of 3 372 Mandrax tablets, worth an estimated R200 000, were recovered last night (Tuesday) together with cash, following a joint sting operation near Ingogo, just outside Newcastle.

Operation units working hand in hand were: Operation Fiela Task Team (KwaZulu-Natal), the Newcastle K9 Unit and the Ithemba Tracing Team. The team received information about an African male transporting narcotics from Gauteng to Newcastle.

Members were placed at strategic points, explained SAPS spokesperson, Captain Jabulani Ncube. At one of these points, a vehicle was spotted traveling on a gravel road just outside Newcastle.

“The operational members boxed the vehicle in and approached the suspect tactically. The suspect was secured and a search was conducted in his presence. The members found a loose compartment in the vehicle and Mandrax tablets were hidden inside. The local Criminal Record Centre also attended the scene and a full search was then conducted. The vehicle was also seized.”

Ncube added one suspect was arrested for the possession of narcotics, and is expected to appear in the Newcastle Magistrate’s Court soon. Investigations into the matter continue.
