Suspects on the run after CBD supermarket robbery

"There were no serious injuries and no shots were fired, despite the suspects being armed."

A group of armed robbers stormed a supermarket in the CBD earlier this morning.

No shots were fired during the robbery, which took place at Indali Supermarket on Voortrekker Street. Imran Ghafoor of Newcastle 911 confirmed approximately nine suspects are on the run.

“The suspects took cash, cigarettes and airtime,” he said. “There were no serious injuries and no shots were fired, despite the suspects being armed. No arrests have been made.”

Newcastle 911 was on scene with local security companies and members of SAPS.

However, Newcastle SAPS spokesperson, Captain Jabulani Ncube said it would be premature for him to comment on the matter at this stage.

SAPS spokesman, Captain Jabulani Ncube said he would only be able to provide details at a later stage.

“I am not aware of the incident in question right now. All management will be debriefed tomorrow morning (March 23), so I will only be able to provide more information then.”
