Karateka showcase maximum power with minimum movement

The NKZN JKA Regional Championships will be held on March 7 in Newcastle.

The SA JKA Standardisation Seminar was held at the Wanderers Club in Illovo recently.

The annual seminar is one of the most important dates on the SA JKA calendar, as this is where all SA JKA Dojo Heads, and this year 222 JKA black belts, were informed of new developments and improved JKA karate techniques, which are to be carried over to the respective JKA dojos within South Africa.

According to Sensei Johan Swart, the first session was led by Sensei Johan La Grange (JKA 6th Dan), SAJKA Chief Instructor and Technical Director, and involved the stances and moves from the JKA kata Hangetsu, which in Japanese means ‘half-moon’.

“Emphasis was laid on the foundation phase; namely, strong basics and the effective use of hips,” explained Sensei Swart. “The kata class concentrated on creating power with little movement. Tekki Nidan and Tekki Sandan katas respectively, meaning ‘Iron Horse Riding – Level 2 and Level 3’, were used to demonstrate technique and form. As all three ‘Tekki’ katas (Tekki Shodan being Level 1) are performed in a straight line, in only one stance (kiba-dachi), with no directional change, accurate use of hip rotation (while still facing forward) is essential and vital in creating power with little movement.”

The kumite training dealt with correct distancing and combinations, and emphasis was laid on power and speed for maximum output, which can only be obtained through constant training of both body and mind.

Sensei Johan Swart added: “The Standardisation Seminar is a colloquium which every JKA black belt should strive to attend, as the information gained is indispensable for personal growth and central to support teaching at respective dojos.”
