Chaos erupts during march outside Newcastle Magistrate’s Court

A motorcade march took place, leading to Philani Thwala's bail application hearing.

Traffic was disturbed after chaos erupted on February 11, outside the Newcastle Magistrate’s Court on Kirkland Street. This was due to a motorcade march which took place, leading to Philani Thwala’s bail application hearing.

Thwala is allegedly linked to the murders of ANC leader, Martin Sithole and Sithole’s close friend, Buthanani Shange, who were gunned down on Voortrekker Street on May 12, 2019.

Activist group, Newcastle Deserves Better chairman, Lekgotla Monareng and the co-ordinator of the motorcade march, said they stood together with the families which were affected, following Sithole’s killing:

“We were there to support Martin Sithole’s case, subsequent to the article that appeared in the Newcastle Advertiser, which alleged Philani Thwala confessed to the killing of Sithole and Buthanani Shange. There is also a link with Sithole and Wandile Ngobeni [Manqasha], because you will remember that Sithole was allegedly killed because he was a witness to Manqasha’s case. Sithole and Buthani Shange left behind their families and they were breadwinners for their families, but their lives were lost because of the alleged benefit for Philani Thwala.”

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
