Taiwanese community rings in the New Year

The colour red is important during Chinese New Year as it represents good luck and happiness.

The Newcastle Taiwanese Chamber of Commerce hosted a family day at Blackrock Casino on January 18. This was in anticipation of the Chinese and Taiwanese New Year, which will take place on January 25.

The two communities will celebrate the Year of the Rat, which one of its zodiac animals and is said to symbolise
wealth and the beginning of a new day. Decked with red decor, the hall saw many members of the Chinese and Taiwanese enjoying a laugh over Chinese cuisine.

The colour red, according to the Chinese, is important during Chinese New Year as it represents good luck and happiness. Dance groups, both cultural and traditional, entertained guests before special certificates were handed out to individuals.
