Contestants represent Newcastle on the national stage

Both contestants unanimously agreed confidence played a major role in competing in a pageant.

After successfully placing in the top three at the Miss Zee TV India South Africa Northern KwaZulu-Natal pageant, Sharnê Dheochand (17) and Seijal Singh (19) proceeded to compete in the national pageant on Saturday (December 7) in Durban.

The pair, who wowed the crowd with their exceptional performances in each of their individual talent categories, will now compete against contestants from around the country.

“I am excited and nervous at the same time,” smiled Seijal.

She said being an introvert made it difficult for her to come out of her shell, but had been afforded the opportunity to step out of her comfort zone.

“It is very daunting standing on stage in front of hundreds of people and literally putting yourself out there.”

Sharnê, a natural-born actor and model who realised her talent at an early age, said it was second nature for her and
encouraged others to stay true to themselves.

“Most of the girls chose dancing as their talent. I chose the unconventional route and showcased my acting skills, as it is one of my strengths,” said Sharnê.

She will be performing an emotive monologue as her talent item. Seijal on the other hand, with the help of her dancing coach, will render a religious dance with the focus being the triumphs of good over evil.

“The message in my dance will also portray the fight against women and children abuse,” she elaborated.

Both contestants unanimously agreed confidence played a major role in competing in a pageant.

“Entering these pageants is not as easy as people may think; it takes hard work, courage and motivation.”

They said receiving support from their families was paramount to their success.

“It is an achievement to be chosen to represent Newcastle. It is not just about the crown, we want to use this platform to make a difference in the community, through charity work,” they concluded.
