The Earthy Cook keeps it naturally tasty

Bathandwa hopes to make a difference in the community, by opening doors for new and aspiring chefs to succeed.

“Eating is a necessity but cooking is an art,” – this is the sage view of Bathandwa Nkambule, otherwise known as the ‘The Earthy Cook’, who has been making quite an impression in the culinary field, especially among locals.

Bathandwa describes her journey as a humble one, starting from the beginning.

“My family and I are originally from Madadeni Section 6 and we moved to Newcastle in search of better opportunities and a better life.”

Starting off her education at Huttenpark Primary School and then later attending Ferrum High School, Bathandwa went on to study public relations and media studies, before discovering this field was not exactly her passion.

“I remember feeling very lost and confused and not exactly sure of what I was going to do, so I came home and decided to breathe, as I was experiencing a lot of self-doubt. Then I discovered how much I actually enjoy cooking and creating, and from there my passion was fuelled.”

As a proud vegan, Bathandwa aims to create unique and colorful dishes.

“Everyone always believes that being vegan is extremely boring and there is not a lot that one can work with, but beyond those stereotypical comments there is potential.”

Over the past few years, Bathandwa has specialised in menu design, food editing, blogging and content creation.

“We truly underestimate our country’s potential in the cooking world. South Africa has the true taste of home, ranging from various cultures which can be brought to their peak in culinary world. Can you imagine a world with traditional South African food with a modern taste, because I can,” stated Bathandwa.

When she isn’t in the kitchen, you can find Bathandwa on the greens of a golf course or practicing yoga.

“You become more conscious of your body and your well-being when you do research on different kinds of foods, and it allows you to practice a healthy and balanced lifestyle.”

Looking to the future, Bathandwa aspires to open her own chain of restaurants, keeping it local and healthily South African, and to celebrate life by creating many more fantastic dishes.

She also hopes to make a difference in the community, by opening doors for new and aspiring chefs to succeed through the work she does.
