Several local emergency groups have reported a tornado has hit parts of the Utrecht area.

Sources confirmed the Department of Correctional Services Waterval Prison staff and residential areas were besieged by intense weather conditions and have been severely impacted, with debris lying all over.

Responders at the scene have said barbed wire, branches, trees and more are lying on the roads in the wake of the devastating storm.

They have since urged motorists in the area to practice extreme caution.

Along with the debris, multiple sources have said damages are severe and there have been injuries, with a triage centre set up for treatment.

They are now urging the community to come to the aid of those who were affected.

A drop-off point was set up at Newcastle Corner earlier tonight.

Ithemba Security Services and The Pines Wedding and Conference Village have set up another 24-hour drop off point at both business premises.

All donations will be delivered to the affected area(s).

Items needed include mattresses, blankets, food, clothing and any other disaster necessities.

Multiple local emergency services are currently at the scene – this is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
