A good day’s stride for parkrunners

Those at the starting line were ready to take on the challenge of the five kilometre run, as well as take in the breathtaking surroundings.

Parkrunners braved windy and icy conditions this past Saturday morning (November 2) at the Grey Goose Game Lodge.

With approximately 60 competitors taking part in the run and everyone ready for the activities of the day, excitement brewed.

Those at the starting line were ready to take on the challenge of the five kilometre run, as well as take in the breathtaking surroundings.

Amidst the runners were young and old from all across Newcastle, as well as Dundee and Ladysmith, who made the journey to enjoy the popular parkrun which takes place every Saturday morning.

Athol Root kicked off the day running his 100th parkrun:

“It has always been such a wonderful experience for me to take in the fresh air and the surroundings, but it does require a lot of hard work and dedication to stay healthy and fit.”

Also breaking boundaries in the running community of Newcastle was Sabelo Gama, who completed the parkrun in exactly 16 minutes and 53 seconds, setting a new record.

“Running is like therapy to me and I love every second of it,’’ said Gama.

One by one, runners passed the 5km mark and celebrated their endeavours and also had the opportunity to socialise with other runners over a cup of coffee or a breakfast at the lodge’s restaurant.

Don’t forget to register for the parkrun at www.parkrun.co.za every Saturday at Grey Goose, or any other registered parkrun venues in South Africa.
