WATCH: Town unites in aftermath of party

Armed with spades, brooms and refuse bags, they set about tackling the immense mess before them.

It wasn’t their mess, but that wasn’t going to stop them. So said Wynand and Liesel Burger, and the many who joined them in cleaning up shattered glass and discarded litter left behind after Saturday’s revelry at the Newcastle Swimming Pool.

When the Burgers drove by the pool – at the corner of Drakensberg and Aquamarine Drives – on Sunday morning, they must have seemed lonely figures sweeping the parking area. Yet this was just a step to an effort described by some as ‘overwhelming’.

Watch footage from the clean-up effort below:

Part of the credit is certainly due to Johan Pieters, who drove past the area and seeing what the Burgers hoped to accomplish, broadcast a voice message on local WhatsApp groups asking for assistance. Within minutes, residents were arriving in their numbers.

Armed with spades, brooms and refuse bags, they set about tackling the immense mess before them, overcoming the enormous task with enthusiasm and an almost tangible spirit.
