The Northern KwaZulu-Natal JKA karate region celebrated its 10th ‘camp anniversary’ at Kwazinungu on the weekend.

This could perhaps be considered one of the best NKZN JKA Gasshukus yet, with more than 70 karateka in attendance and the best weather one could have asked for.

Once at the campsite, karateka were divided into their rooms, after which the camp leader recapped on all the conditions, rules and highlights for the weekend.

As per tradition, the seniors gathered for a two hour training session in the early evening, while the juniors went for a sunset stroll up the mountain. Saturday dawned dark and early with stars fading gradually as the sun came up, heating the earth as cold bodies assembled for the morning exercise and photo shoot.

Rejuvenated after a hearty breakfast, karateka prepared for a day filled with karate training, obstacle courses, fitness and endurance sessions, team-building, volleyball, a camouflage game and dance competition, and ended off with the customary black belt initiation ceremony and reminiscing over the good old days.

Sunday’s stick bread ritual around a campfire ensured the spirit of fellowship continued, finding a place in each one’s heart and securing a silent spot until next year’s camp, leaving karateka satisfied and content to go home.
