Basketball tournament up-skills players

During the three-day tournament, many games were played including exhibition matches, where the KZN All Stars team went head to head with University of Johannesburg (UJ), in both male and female clashes.

The Amajuba Basketball Invitational 2019 Tournament, supported by the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Sport and Recreation, KZN Basketball Association and Vodacom, held its third edition at the Phelandaba Sports Grounds in Madadeni, from June 15 to 17.

The initiator of The Amajuba Basketball Invitational Tournament, Nhlanhla Sibiya, explained the purpose of the event.

“It is to revive the sport of basketball in the KZN Province, and also to get the different districts in KZN to grow the sport of basketball. Most importantly, we want to expose the talent of young players who can then be scouted by universities. This year, we wanted to be inclusive and added the wheelchair basketball games. We also wanted to celebrate the youth, as it Youth Month, and the sport must be made popular especially with the youth. The sport carries good life skills any child can learn from. We want our communities to also understand the sport and fully participate in it.”

During the three-day tournament, many games were played including exhibition matches, where the KZN All Stars team went head to head with University of Johannesburg (UJ), in both male and female clashes.

From this match, the university would then choose a player to be offered a study bursary.
