Graduate plans to give back to the community

As a foundation we are inspired by many different things, but our focus is on the youth and the importance of education."

A recent law graduate who hails from Blaauwbosch, is changing lives in his community.

24-year-old Swati Dlamini graduated on May 16, with a Bachelor of Law (LLB) degree from the University of Zululand, in Empangeni, Richards Bay.

Dlamini is co-founder of the Ubuciko Youth Development Agency, a non-profit organisation, which provides educational programmes to the community, because he said his passion is planting seeds of hope in his community.

“As a foundation we are inspired by many different things, but our focus is on the youth and the importance of education.

“We provide career expos for local schools, where we teach high school learners how to apply for teritiary studies, what courses to choose relevant to what they are also passionate about.

“We also understand that there are many people with degrees who are sitting at home and not getting jobs, so we teach them of other ways to make their degrees work for them, without just looking at one thing.”

Dlamini confessed it had been difficult for him to find a job. “After I finished my degree, I realised how difficult it can be to get employed. Most law firms require you to have your own vehicle, and we know that with most black families that is hard to achieve.”

“Seeing my own struggle, that’s how I knew the foundation had to be formed because I didn’t want to see any other youth go through what I go through.”

Dlamini said he had been lucky to receive assistance from the municipality.

“In 2015, I was lucky to be granted a municipal bursary to be able to pay for my registration which was R3800 at the time. “I want to be able to give back to the community, as I was helped when I needed assistance.”

He is currently registered for a Masters Degree in Law (LLM) degree, at University of Zululand.
