Dear Readers,

One of my earliest memories is sitting at a kitchen table, reading a newspaper and arguing with my parents about the correct pronunciation of the word ‘island’.

As a child, I was convinced it was ‘is-land’ and I could not understand why the ‘s’ was silent. I remember being read to all the time – my mother will tell you that she read to me from when I was a baby, and I know my dad was an avid reader himself.

It comes as no surprise then that I am pretty much obsessed with books. I have an extensive collection, and most of them I have read more than twice. I was lucky enough to find a partner who loves reading as much as I do, and we indulge our mutual habit with unabashed glee.

I will read anything – from gossip magazines to local and national newspapers, romance and horror novels, bestsellers and biographies to blogs and online articles.

I am a voracious consumer of information, and I am not ashamed to admit it! In celebration of National Book Week this week, the Caxton brand is supporting the campaign for literacy, by highlighting the importance of reading.

Learn more about the #CaxtonCares Project and get inspired to pick up and read more books, on page 11.

Tied into this, the Newcastle Library has been closed for the past year, and we have reported extensively about how this has affected both students and the community at large.

There may be an end in sight… read more about the library in this edition. With the Easter holiday behind us, I welcome back those of you who were out of town. I trust you had a relaxing time and are now refreshed and recharged.
