Editor's note

A night of excellence and worthy awards

For the Renaissance Art Project, Team Newcastle Advertiser entered the Sculpture Category, and won for our rendition of @MadamMache – a socialite with a dedicated Insta following.

Dear Readers,

While we had major technological issues at the Advertiser office last week, all systems have now been restored.

We have had an exciting week – many of us attended the annual Caxton Excellence Awards at the prestigious Times Square in Pretoria last week. This exclusive event highlights and recognises the best of the best from the Caxton media stable.

Congratulations to Terry Worley and Johann Hamman from sister publication, the Northern KZN Courier – Terry was a finalist in the Best Regular Column category, while Johann scooped the prize.

Well done also to Mariska Louw, Editor of the Get It Northern KZN/Midlands/Pietermaritzburg, who was a finalist for the Best Get It Journalist award.

Nazir Mohammad and Arlene Maitland of the Ladysmith Gazette were also finalists in the Classified Advertisement Feature in Print and/or Digital for ‘Learn your ABC’ – well done!

For the Renaissance Art Project, Team Newcastle Advertiser entered the Sculpture Category, and won for our rendition of @MadamMache – a socialite with a dedicated Insta following.

Well done to Chantall Meikle-Braes, Tersia Gopi, Bruce Douglas, Rene du Plessis and Jermaine Sebastian! If you are interested in Madam Mache, you can follow her on Instagram: madammache.

How did the Newcastle Advertiser fare at the awards you ask? Let’s put it into perspective:

The Newcastle Advertiser was entered into the category Best Sold Newspaper of the Year.

There were 42 newspapers eligible to enter this category, including newspapers with high paginations and sometimes multiple publications per week.

The judges said this category was ‘a strongly contended one’ with a strong standard set.

The Top 5 recognised in this category were:

Lowvelder with Editor, De Wet Potgieter

South Coast Herald with Editor, Colleen Haggard

Newcastle Advertiser with Editor, Reveshni Douglas

Vaalweekblad with Editor, Retha Fitchat

George Herald with Editors Lizette da Silva and Ilse Schoonraad.

While we may have lost out to the George Herald, to know our community newspaper has been recognised consistently over the past few years, is nothing short of a fantastic and worthy achievement.

This proves we have a winning formula: a passionate and talented Editorial Department team, a dedicated Advertising Department, a strong Admin Department and supportive management.

None of this would matter however, without the loyalty and trust of you, the reader. We are aiming higher and constantly improving to give you a variety of educational, in-depth, entertaining and informative articles to read each week.
