SPORT: Golfers steel themselves for charity (Gallery)

At the culmination of this year's Charity Cup, winners’ dues went to Richard and Willy Clayton, who scored a combined 48 points to claim victory.

Effort is best spent in the service of others.

For local golfers on Saturday, this meant a gruelling round of 18 at the Newcastle Golf Club during the Chinese New Year Charity Cup competition.

The format of play was better ball.

Representatives from the Newcastle Chinese Golf Association explained two donations of R10 000 each were made to St Anthony’s Child and Youth Care Centre and the Hope in Christ Mission.

These amounts were comprised mostly of sponsorships.

Numerous sponsors and donors also contributed to the vast number of prizes and lucky draw rewards up for grabs.

The Charity Cup was first held in 2017.

According to Chinese Golf Association member, Andy Hsu, the event was devised by Mr Peng of the Chinese School, and two donations were made that year.

“The idea was to host a charity cup on an annual basis to help the local community,” he added.

At the culmination of this year’s Charity Cup, winners’ dues went to Richard and Willy Clayton, who scored a combined 48 points to claim victory.

Second place went to Colin Gregory and Justin Glass (47 points).

Third place went down to a count-out; Louis Kruger and Patrick Gregory ended ahead with 45 points, followed by Lionel Phillips and Tony Sharp in fourth.

Tommy and Sheng-Po Tseng rounded off the top five (44 points onco).

Congratulations to these golfers on their great rounds, and to all contributors for ensuring the relevance of the day reigned supreme.
