DHS ‘artlings’ enjoy Durban

What a privilege it was for the learners to see originals by Picasso, Matisse and Rodin - to name just a few

The DHS Grade 11 Art learners travelled on tour to Durban, viewing many different art galleries along the way. What a privilege it was for the learners to see originals by Picasso, Matisse and Rodin – to name just a few. The Grade 12 syllabus deals mainly with South African artists, and many of these works can be seen in the Durban Art Gallery and the Tatham Art Gallery.

These local artists include Irma Stern, Willie Bester, Jackson Hlungwane, Diane Victor, William Kentridge and others. The group also had the opportunity to be inspired by a local artist working at the BAT Art Centre in the Durban Small Craft Harbour. This artist was ready to give advice and guidance to the young, eager DHS ‘artlings’.

A highlight for all was the drumming session with the ‘Talking Drum’ group, and also the early morning pilates sessions on the beach – to help stretch muscles as well as horizons!

A huge thank you to Mrs Carter for accompanying the learners – hopefully this experience will help DHS artists grow and reach new creative heights.
