Ten arrests made, firearms, money recovered after Pick and Win shoot-out

Police react swiftly to arrest 10 heartless criminals

Police reacted swiftly after a wild-west shoot-out rocked Dundee on Sunday morning.  A gang of around 20 armed men – one of whom carried an AK 47 rifle – stormed Pick and Win Supermarket at around 9am.

A nearby police patrol van reacted almost instantly and came under rifle fire.  Warrant Officer Bruce Simpson and his reservist wife, Corrie, were both injured from shrapnel after bullets shattered the windscreen of the vehicle.  The back tyre was also shot out.

A passer-by, thought to be from Dannhauser, was shot and wounded in the chest. He was said to be in a serious condition.  A woman shopper was also hit.

At least two robbers were wounded by police – one in the hip and the other in leg.

Three of the robbers were arrested in undergrowth behind the shop.  Ten were arrested and over R20 000 in air time recovered  and a quantity of cigarettes seized.

Three vehicles used by the gang were also impounded.  At least 12 other gang members are said to be still on the run.
