Ladysmith devotees recite the Gita to worship Lord Krishna

The daily programme will include kirtans, bhajans, discourses, arati, havan and pushpanjali

The Ramakrishna Centre of South Africa, Ladysmith Sub-Centre, will be observing Sri Krishna Ashtami celebrations from Friday, August 16, to Friday, August 23.

The Bhagavad Gita will be recited during these celebrations. Popularly known as the Gita, this book is one of the great religious classics of the world. Hindus, irrespective of their sects and denominations, have great reverence for this book. A ceremonial reading of the book, or even a part thereof, is believed to confer great religious merit.

The book itself, comprising 18 chapters, forms an integral part of a much bigger work, the epic Mahabharata.

It is a poetical work in the form of a dialogue between Sri Krishna and Arjuna on the battlefield of Kurukshetra. The setting of the battlefield contributes a dramatic element to the book and relates religion to the realities of life.

The centre invites you to join in this most auspicious celebration and worship of Lord Krishna, weekdays from 6.30pm to 7.30pm daily and over the weekend from 5pm to 6pm. The venue will be the Sri Ramakrishna Shrine in Agra Road.

There will be a special programme on Friday, August 23, from 5pm to 6.30pm. The keynote address will be delivered by Revered Swami Shubhavratanandaji Maharaj (president of the Ramakrishna Society, St Pietersburg, Russia). Supper prasadham will be served.

Sri Krishna Janmashtami will be observed on the 23rd, with the first session from 6pm to 8pm and the second session from 8.30pm until past midnight.

The daily programme will include kirtans, bhajans, Gita recitals, discourses, DVDs, arati, havan and pushpanjali. All are welcome to attend.
