Close to 1500 people arrested in KZN in 2-week multi-disciplinary operations

The arrests were for crimes including murder, possession of unlicensed firearms, robbery, carjacking, rape, drunken driving and assault

Police officers in KZN embarked on a number of multi-disciplinary operations in the province from July 16 to 29.

Specific operations were conducted in areas plagued by crime. The operations included roadblocks, suspect raids, firearm raiding, stop and search operations, inspections of liquor outlets, cordon and search operations, and high-visibility patrols in various parts of the province (including hot-spot areas).

Those arrested were charged for crimes including murder, possession of unlicensed firearms, robbery, carjacking, rape, drunken driving and assault.

A total of 1417 suspects were arrested for various crimes.

277 suspects were arrested for drug-related crimes, while 130 were busted for drunk driving. A total of 126 were nabbed for assault, 47 for robbery, 35 for murder, 12 for housebreaking and 15 for rape.

75 suspects were charged for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition after 69 firearms and 540 rounds of ammunition were recovered. The firearms that were seized included 61 pistols, four assault rifles, two homemade firearms and two shotguns.

A number of arrests were also made for crimes such as attempted murder, public violence, fraud, domestic violence and dealing in liquor without a licence.

Drugs such as dagga, heroin, mandrax and cocaine were also seized, as well as a large quantity of alcohol, clothing, suspected stolen vehicles, firearms, tools and knives.

All the arrested suspects appeared in various courts throughout the province, while others were issued with summonses to pay fines.
