Ladysmith man lands role on popular TV soapie

He plays the role of Jimmy, a wedding planner who happens to be transgender

Sicelo “Wonke Wonke” Mbonane (27) is a star who was born and bred in Ladysmith in an area called Watersmeet (Ephayikeni).

Working for the Department of Social Development as a social worker, he recently landed himself a role in a popular soap opera called ‘uZalo‘ which airs weekdays on SABC 1 at 8.30pm.

In the ‘uZalo’ soapie, he plays the role of Jimmy, a wedding planner who happens to be transgender. He describes it as being a lot of fun for him.

“My agency, Mizan, opened the doors to greener pastures for me, because they submitted my pictures to the directors of uZalo. Surprisingly, the crew of uZalo did not even want me to audition for the role I am currently playing. However, I ended up signing a contract with them on May 21 this year, which is a dream come true.

“One thing I can say to people is that they should never limit themselves by telling themselves there are things they can and cannot do, because life is full of surprises. I never imagined myself being on TV, but here I am. Education is also important,” smiles Sicelo.
