Ladysmith runners take on the Comrades Marathon

The runners said spectator support throughout the race was exceptional, and it helped keep them going

Ladysmith athletes joined the thousands at the start of the 94th Comrades Marathon on Sunday morning (June 9).

A number of locals set out from the Durban City Hall for the up run to Scottsville Racecourse in Pietermaritzburg, including 16 members of Ladysmith Athletics Club, 11 runners from Emnambithi Striders and two members of Ezakheni 150 Athletic Club.

The latter two runners both finished in under nine hours.Speaking to some of the Ladysmith participants, they said the weather was great for running, with a overcast morning and mildly humid conditions giving way to a warm midmorning and afternoon with cool breezes.

The runners said spectator support throughout the race was exceptional, and it helped keep them going.

According to Ladysmith runners, the toughest areas of the Comrades Marathon are Polly Shortts and Inchanga, which boast significant ascents they managed to get through without incident.

The runners added the water tables were also exceptional, with plenty of refreshment along the way.

Well done to all the Ladysmith runners who took part in this year’s Comrades Marathon – you have certainly done your town proud!
