On Wednesday (May 8), protesting community members in the Bethany area of Bergville were arrested by police.
They were engaging in an illegal protest that disrupted voting in the area.
Police arrested eight suspects aged between 17 and 46 years old.
The suspects appeared in the Bergville Magistrate’s Court on Thursday (May 9). Bethany community members were seen in numbers outside the court to show their support for those who had been arrested.
They are due back in court on Wednesday (May 15) where they will have the opportunity to make a formal bail application.
