UPDATE: SAPS K9 Unit apprehend Harding Street MTN robbery suspects outside Memel

It is suspected one of the vehicles used by the suspects was stolen during a recent hijacking.

A sense of horror and shock filled the CBD branch of MTN, when six brazen robbers entered the store this morning (October 5).

The perpetrators allegedly produced firearms and robbed those in the store.

“They stole an undisclosed amount of cash and jewellery from customers and staff, before fleeing the scene,” said Newcastle SAPS spokesperson, Captain Jabulani Ncube.

However, one of the suspects was apprehended in the store by Ithemba Security before he could escape with his accomplices.

Shortly after the remaining five perpetrators fled the scene, a firearm was found abandoned near the store.

The SAPS K9 Unit managed to track the other suspects down, and apprehended them on the Memel Road.

“The K9 Unit apprehended three men and two women, who were believed to be involved in the robbery,” Captain Ncube confirmed.

SAPS confiscated the two vehicles used by the suspects – it is believed one of the cars was stolen during a recent hijacking.

Captain Ncube said further investigations are underway.
