NHS hosted a riveting Spelling Bee Cluster Competition on August 18, where Grade 7 through to Grade 9 learners from Suryaville Primary, Huttenpark Primary, Lennoxton Primary and Newcastle High School participated in the event.

With the top three spellers of each of the respective schools taking part, the competition proved to be a test of mental abilities and saw each of the learners giving their best.

Prevana Choonilall from Newcastle High took first place, with Thandolwenkosi Mabaso and Minenhle Mpanza from Suryaville Primary School taking second and third place retrospectively.

The three winners then represented Newcastle Cluster at the District Spelling Bee Competition on August 31.

At the District Spelling Bee competition, which took place at the Amajuba Education Centre, NHS was one of eleven schools who participated.

There were 18 learners in the competition, from as far away as Dundee and Utrecht. It was a tough competition with learners exhibiting outstanding spelling abilities as they vied for the top three spots.

Prevana Choonilall, who represented NHS, did her very best. However she stumbled on a word which saw her being eliminated from the competition. This resulted in her securing a joint fifth position overall.

NHS is very proud of Prevana and her achievement.
