Theft of Telkom cables leaves residents without internet or telephone lines

This has been the second time in 18 days that the cables were stolen

Residents of Acaciavale have been largely affected by the theft on the Telkom cables in Centenary Road.

The cables that are underground in Centenary Road from the four-way stop heading towards the temple have been stolen on numerous occasions.

Speaking to a Telkom worker, he says that they have a very difficult time with the theft of the cables and it costs a lot of money to have them replaced.

It is believed that the cables are being stolen during the night and due to the darkness and dense veld and trees it makes it very easy for the criminals to hide there and work to steal the cables.

On Sunday evening the cables were stolen yet again, which left residents without the use of their internet and landlines.

This has been the second time in 18 days that the cables were stolen.

Concerned residents contacted councillor Abbas Warasally as they need help in getting the issue resolved.

Cllr Warasally adds that, “in the area there is a school, clinic, numerous businesses and religious organisations that can’t operate without the use of internet and telephone lines”.

He pleads with the municipality to have the trees and overgrown grass cut down so that the criminals can’t hide there to steal the cables and also to avoid house break ins in the area.
