WATCH: Community marches to Town Hall in protest against rates

Protesters gathered on Scott Street this morning, and waited over an hour for Mayor, Makhosini Nkosi to receive the memorandum.

Residents made an emphatic statement as protesters today (Friday, August 25).

A group of approximately 150 residents gathered in front of Town Hall, in protest against high rates increases.

Many had their say, often to vocal roars of agreement.

Former councillor, Solomon Mthabela accused the municipality on capitalising on the ignorance of ratepayers.

He then led the assembled crowd in chants of protest.

A portion of Scott Street was closed off due to protest action.

However, it took over an hour forĀ Mayor, Makhosini Nkosi to exit the municipal building and receive a memorandum of concerns.

Watch footage of the protest here:

The memorandum called into question fluctuating bills, the inconsistency of meter readings and more.

Residents have also called for block tariffs to be entirely phased out.

Cllr Nkosi was given until September 15 to respond, either through the media or through direct correspondence.

He has promised detailed feedback to all concerns.

Mayor, Makhosini Nkosi receives the memorandum handed to him.

In the meantime, residents continue to ask questions about how they will make ends meet this month.
