Sewage leaks in and around major shopping centre for years on end, uThukela respond to the matter

According to business owners, the problem has been fixed over the years but just comes back again

Sewage has been leaking for the past six years in the Game parking lot and behind the centre at the corner of Lyell and King Street.

According to business owners, the problem has been fixed over the years but just comes back again.

They say that for the past three weeks, sewer water has been bubbling up and flowing non-stop.

On some days, shop owners say the sewer water even flows into their shops from the drains and manholes. Owners add that the stench is horrendous and even their customers complain about the smell and the flies.

In response, uThukela District Municipality say they have, on a continuous basis, been dealing with the matter. They add that the main cause of the re-occurrence of the problem is due to foreign fluids that are deposited into the system and thereafter block the lines in the process.

uThukela spokesperson Jabulani Mkhonza says, “Our teams have been dealing with the blockages as and when necessary, and it must be noted that the chemicals to be utilised are hazardous and have corroded our system.”
