Watch your speed or you could be fined or arrested, says Public Safety

"These officers, along with other members of Public Safety, do such a great job in making sure the roads are safe and that those who do break the law are held accountable"

Three drivers were nabbed for speeding in Centenary Road on Friday morning (July 6).

The motorists were immediately arrested after Public Safety officers caught them exceeding the speed limit.

If a vehicle is found to be going over the legal speed limit, the driver is pulled over.

A True Cam Digital Speed Machine is able to tell at what speed a vehicle is travelling, including taking a photo.

On Tuesday morning, a Ladysmith Gazette journalist caught up with Public Safety officers, where a motorist was caught doing 71km/h in a 60 zone. He received a fine of R300.

Speaking to the traffic officers, they elaborated on the structure of fines and arrests.

91km/h and upwards in a 60 zone will result in an arrest.

The same applies if you are doing 140km/h and upwards in a 100 zone.

The highest fine in a 60 zone is R1200 and in a 100 zone R2200.

Please bear in mind that in a 60 zone: If a driver is exceeding the speed to 85-90km/h in a light motor vehicle, the fine will be R1000.

The fine for a heavy motor vehicle will be R1200.

In a 100 zone: If drivers are caught doing 135-139km/h, the fine for a light motor vehicle is R1500 and a heavy motor vehicle R2200.

One resident commented that, “These officers, along with other members of Public Safety, do such a great job in making sure the roads are safe and that those who do break the law are held accountable.”

Motorists are warned to stick to the speed limit in order to avoid hefty fines or being arrested.
