LETTER: Giving thanks for the blessed rains

If parents are not teaching their children right from wrong, how can we expect any improvement in the future?

Madam – We must give thanks for the lovely rain we have been having since the beginning of the year.

For the past couple of years, we have been subjected to the wrath of Mother Nature because we have suffered with severe drought and some areas have such heavy water restrictions that they have had no running water in their taps at all.

Our sister town of Vryheid seemed to have suffered the worst, and I was glad to see our community stepped up to help them when things got really bad.

Now we are always seeing articles and tips on how to save water, but I think the main problem is that we have such a culture of apathy within this community that this type of awareness and education is falling on deaf ears.

Charity begins at home, so too do issues like saving water. If parents are not teaching their children right from wrong, how can we expect any improvement in the future?

I have seen too many instances where, while children are not actively encouraged to waste water, nothing is being done to show children how to use water sparingly. It is such a precious resource that I don’t understand how anyone cannot take this seriously!

One day, we will be left without a drop of water in our taps and rivers, and what use will preventative measures be then?

Wise up Newcastle!
