Warning: Chaos erupts in Ladysmith as striking municipal workers block streets and overturn bins

It is believed that the workers are demanding a salary increase

The municipal strike in Ladysmith entered its sixth day today (May 14).

All main streets in the CBD have been blocked off by Alfred Duma Local Municipality workers.

This morning, they overturned rubbish bins in the streets and broke glass bottles all over the place.

Murchison, Alexandra, Forbes, Queen and Lyell Street are “No Go Zones” as a result of the strike.

It is believed that the striking workers are demanding a salary increase.

“On Friday, the workers broke locks at municipal premises and bolted gates with their own locks so that nobody could work,” said a municipal employee.

Police and Public Safety officers are currently on scene.

People are advised to stay away from the CBD until the protesters disperse and the roads are cleared.
